Strong geometry dependence of the Casimir force between interpenetrated rectangular gratings

Summary: The study measured the Casimir force between two rectangular silicon gratings and found that before they interpenetrated, the Casimir force exhibited a much stronger geometry dependence. After the gratings interpenetrated, the Casimir force became non-zero and independent of displacement.

Membrane-Based Scanning Force Microscopy

Summary: The study reports the development of a scanning force microscope based on an ultrasensitive silicon nitride membrane optomechanical transducer. In this instrument, the substrate vibrates while the scanning tip remains at rest, demonstrating excellent force sensitivity even when loaded with samples. The prospects and limitations of the instrument as a quantum-limited force sensor and imaging tool are discussed.
