Biofabrication of natural hydrogels for cardiac, neural, and bone Tissue engineering Applications

Kamil Elkhoury et al.

Summary: Natural hydrogels are highlighted as promising biomaterials in tissue engineering applications due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. Innovative biofabrication techniques, such as textile techniques and 3D bioprinting, play a significant role in developing advanced scaffolds for tissue engineering. This review also discusses the emerging applications of biofabricated natural hydrogels in cardiac, neural, and bone tissue engineering.

Synthesis and characterization of C2C12-laden gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) from marine and mammalian sources

Kamil Elkhoury et al.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the physicochemical and biological properties of porcine and fish skin GelMA, revealing that fish skin GelMA showed higher swelling ratio and lower moduli post crosslinking, with better support for cell spreading. Low methacrylated fish skin GelMA has potential as a scaffold for skeletal muscle tissue engineering.

Mammalian and Fish Gelatin Methacryloyl-Alginate Interpenetrating Polymer Network Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering

Chen Ma et al.

Summary: Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) has been widely studied for tissue engineering, with fish gelatin gaining attention as a substitute due to limitations with mammalian gelatin. The synthesis of IPN hydrogels using GelMA and alginate showed improved mechanical properties, with differences in mechanical strength and morphology between type A and fish IPN hydrogels. Despite mechanical differences, cell biocompatibilities were not significantly affected.
