Superabsorbent polymer composites derived from polyacrylic acid: Design and synthesis, characterization, and swelling capacities

Summary: Two types of superabsorbent polymers were synthesized by different methods, with the CMC/AAc biodegradable superabsorbent showing the highest swelling capacity. The water absorption capacity of SAPs increased with increases in benzoyl peroxide content, immersion time, and reaction temperature of polymerization.

Speciation Analysis of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in Water with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Summary: Identification and quantification of chromium in water, especially the differentiation between toxic Cr(VI) and harmless Cr(III), can be achieved through surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on distinct spectral features. The method shows high sensitivity and selectivity at pH 10 and 5.5 for Cr(VI) and Cr(III) detection, with a limit of detection below 0.1 mg/L and an error of 10% in quantification. This SERS technique is also insensitive to the presence of co-existing Cr(III) and holds potential for monitoring toxic chromium in various fields.

Treatment of gray wastewater and heavy metal removal from aqueous medium using hydrogels based on novel crosslinkers

Summary: This study utilized new crosslinkers to synthesize polymer hydrogels for the removal of heavy metal ions from water, with AS, AM, and AP hydrogels showing high efficiency in removing copper and nickel ions, as well as reducing COD and total dissolved solids. The results demonstrated significant pollutant reduction capacity of approximately 439.2, 451.4, and 475.8 (mg COD removed/g polymer gel) during treatment.
