Sensogenomics and the Biological Background Underlying Musical Stimuli: Perspectives for a New Era of Musical Research

Music-listening regulates human microRNA expression

Summary: This study found that music listening can impact human gene expression, with individuals with high musical aptitude showing upregulation and downregulation of specific microRNAs after listening to music. These microRNAs are associated with neuronal activity, modulating neuronal plasticity, myelination in the central nervous system, and cognitive functions like memory and long-term potentiation. The upregulated microRNA after music listening, such as miR-132, also play crucial roles in preventing Alzheimer's disease by regulating TAU protein levels and protecting dopaminergic neurons. Additionally, these microRNAs are regulated by immediate early genes known to be associated with musical traits.
