Comparative evaluation of BACTEC FX, BacT/ALERT 3D, and BacT/ALERT VIRTUO-automated blood culture systems using simulated blood cultures

Zhengkang Li et al.

Summary: The VIRTUO system demonstrated faster growth detection for most organisms compared to FX and 3D systems. Bottles containing antibiotic-binding agent showed better bacterial recovery rate when antibiotics were present, especially in BACTEC Plus Aerobic/F bottles.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the clinical impact of plasma mNGS (Karius test) in routine practice, showing limited real-world impact with only a small percentage of cases having positive effect on patient management. Further studies are needed to define high-yield patient populations and integrate mNGS into current testing algorithms effectively.

Clinical Impact of Accelerate Pheno Rapid Blood Culture Detection System in Bacteremic Patients

Ryan K. Dare et al.

Summary: The implementation of AXDX significantly improved patient outcomes, including reduced length of stay, increased frequency of achieving optimal therapy, faster time to optimal therapy, and shorter total days of antimicrobial therapy. The results indicate that AXDX can be integrated into healthcare systems with an active antimicrobial stewardship program without the need for real-time notification.

Do rapid diagnostic methods improve antibiotic prescribing in paediatric bacteraemia?

Amy K. Faugno et al.

Summary: The study found that the implementation of rapid diagnostics alone did not lead to improvements in antibiotic prescribing or patient outcomes. For rapid diagnostics to be effective, they must be combined with active antimicrobial stewardship promotion and adjustment based on early laboratory results.

Are conventional microbiological diagnostics sufficiently expedient in the era of rapid diagnostics? Evaluation of conventional microbiological diagnostics of orthopedic implant-associated infections (OIAI)

Hege Vangstein Aamot et al.

Summary: This study assessed the time required for pathogen identification and antibiotic treatment recommendations in patients with OIAI undergoing conventional microbiological diagnostics at Akershus University Hospital in Norway. The results showed that it takes an average of 2.5 days for pathogen identification and 3.5 days for antibiotic treatment recommendations, with 11% of patients having inconclusive culture results. After receiving treatment recommendations, 61% of patients needed to change antibiotic treatment within 4 days.
