Toward the Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from a Spent Automotive Catalyst with Supported Ionic Liquid Phases

Olga Lanaridi et al.

Summary: The polySILP material showed the capability to separate PGMs from major accompanying interferences in a single separation step, while avoiding problems arising from ionic liquid leaching in the case of SILPs. The use of supported ionic liquid phases allowed a significant reduction in the amount of required ionic liquid compared to conventional liquid-liquid separation, while preventing issues related to emulsion formation. Subsequent stripping experiments further purified the PGMs and facilitated their desorption from the solid material into a pure solution, illustrating a new and convenient approach for recycling platinum group metals through the concept of chemisorbed polySILPs.

Characterization of Vehicle and Laboratory Aged Commercial Three Way Catalyst: A Morphological and Functional Correlation between Real and Simulated Ageing

Mattia Giuliano et al.

Summary: The study characterized a series of identical catalysts aged in different conditions to understand the correlation between real and accelerated ageing protocols. By conducting a complete morphological characterization and functional testing, the study aimed to enable the design of more realistic laboratory ageing protocols. Real samples from engine ageing showed good correlation with laboratory ageing, with some differences attributed to chemical ageing that could not be replicated in the laboratory.

Microwave chloride leaching of valuable elements from spent automotive catalysts: Understanding the role of hydrogen peroxide

Thomas Abo Atia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microwave-assisted leaching behavior of platinum group metals (PGMs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) from end-of-life automotive ceramic catalysts. The in situ generated headspace gas, elemental speciation, and the addition of H2O2 solution all influenced the leachability. The presence of oxidized species and other oxidizable substrates played a role in the leaching efficiency, with H2O2 addition affecting the surface passivation and overall leachability differently for different catalyst compositions.

Characterization of the Evolution of Noble Metal Particles in a Commercial Three-Way Catalyst: Correlation between Real and Simulated Ageing

Mattia Giuliano et al.

Summary: Understanding catalyst ageing phenomena is crucial for designing long lasting efficient catalysts. The study investigates morphological modification and deactivation of active materials during ageing, using specific methodologies to analyze the behavior of metals and support in washcoat material. Results show correlations between real and simulated ageing conditions, shedding light on rapid agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles and chemical ageing effects on the support. Performance tests indicate a good correspondence between vehicle and laboratory aged samples, emphasizing the importance of chemical poisoning in vehicle aged catalysts.
