Relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the incidence of ventilator-associated lower respiratory tract infections: a European multicenter cohort study

Anahita Rouze et al.

Summary: The incidence of ventilator-associated lower respiratory tract infections (VA-LRTI) is significantly higher in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to those with influenza pneumonia or no viral infection. Gram-negative bacilli, mainly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter spp., and Klebsiella spp., were responsible for a large proportion of VA-LRTI episodes.

COVID-19 increased the risk of ICU-acquired bloodstream infections: a case-cohort study from the multicentric OUTCOMEREA network

Niccolo Buetti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk of ICU bloodstream infection (BSI) in critically ill COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients. The results showed that COVID-19 patients had a higher risk of developing ICU-BSI after seven days of ICU stay. Clinicians should pay particular attention to late ICU-BSIs in COVID-19 patients, as the use of tocilizumab or anakinra may increase the risk of ICU-BSI.

Clinical characteristics and day-90 outcomes of 4244 critically ill adults with COVID-19: a prospective cohort study

Matthieu Schmidt et al.

Summary: Among more than 4000 critically ill patients with COVID-19 admitted to our ICUs, 90-day mortality was 31% and decreased from 42 to 25% over the study period. Mortality was higher in older, diabetic, obese and severe ARDS patients.

Unexpectedly High Frequency of Enterococcal Bloodstream Infections in Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients Admitted to an Italian ICU: An Observational Study

Cecilia Bonazzetti et al.

Summary: This study assessed the frequency of ICU-acquired bloodstream infections in coronavirus disease 2019 patients, finding a high infection rate mainly caused by gram-positive bacteria, with Enterococcus being the most common. Patients with bloodstream infections had higher organ failure scores upon ICU admission, longer ICU stays, and more frequent need for invasive mechanical ventilation.
