Calcium phosphate cements: Optimization toward biodegradability

I. Lodoso-Torrecilla et al.

Summary: Synthetic calcium phosphate ceramics are widely used for bone regenerative treatments due to their bioactivity and osteoconductive properties. Injectable CPCs are appealing for minimally invasive surgery and filling irregular bone defects, but their poor degradability can be addressed by introducing macroporosity to accelerate new bone formation.

Characterization of Properties, In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation of Calcium Phosphate/Amino Acid Cements for Treatment of Osteochondral Defects

Lubomir Medvecky et al.

Summary: Novel calcium phosphate cements containing a mixture of four amino acids were used to treat artificial osteochondral defects in the knee, with successful formation of hyaline cartilage and subchondral bone. The enhanced concentration of extracellular collagen amino acids in the cement supported the healing of the defects, showing excellent results in pigs without inflammation and stable tissues after 12 months' healing, with good integration of neocartilage and surrounding tissues.

Summary: The novel CS-MPCs developed in this study have improved physiochemical properties that enhance compatibility in vitro and bone regeneration in vivo. Compared to MPC, CS-MPCs exhibit a longer setting time, higher compressive strength, and more neutral pH.
