Distributional Characteristics and Source Identification of Cadmium in Soils of the Pearl River Delta, China

Tingyong Chen et al.

Summary: The results of the study show serious pollution of Cd in the Pearl River Delta, with high values mainly concentrated in central cities and hotspots with higher Cd content in deep located along rivers. The study suggests that the area is under dual restriction of geological genesis and human activities, highlighting the importance of pollution control.

Spatial assessment models to evaluate human health risk associated to soil potentially toxic elements

Xuefei Sun et al.

Summary: By using positive matrix factorization, health risk assessment, and sequential Gaussian simulation, the study investigated the source apportionment of potentially toxic elements in soils and associated human health risk. The results showed that natural and agricultural sources had the greatest influence on non-carcinogenic risks, while industrial and traffic emissions also contributed to some PTEs. 1.1% of the total area was identified as hazardous areas with non-carcinogenic risks for children.

Ecological risk potential assessment of heavy metal contaminated soils in Ophiolitic formations

Saeed Negahban et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the concentrations of cadmium and lead in the soils of Neyriz, Iran exceed global standard thresholds by 10-40 times, while copper and zinc levels are below the thresholds, indicating contamination from geological formations and Ophiolitic rock masses in the area. Natrual factors such as geological formations can contribute to soil and plant pollution, in addition to pollution caused by human activities.

Nanopore Formation and Structural Changes in Black Shale During the Initial Weathering Stage: A Longmaxi Formation Profile in Northwestern Hunan, China

Xi-Zhun Zhuo et al.

Summary: This study explores the changes in mineral and chemical compositions in shale during the initial weathering stage. It shows that the chemical weathering of black shale is dominated by the oxidation of pyrite and organic matter, leading to color variation and nanopore formation. Nanoporosity may play an important role in the fluid-rock interaction within black shale during the initial weathering stage.

Lead Distribution in Urban Soil in a Medium-Sized City: HouseholdScale Analysis

Emmanuel Obeng-Gyasi et al.

Summary: This study in Greensboro, North Carolina, characterized the potential soil lead exposure risk at the household scale. Findings indicated that 43% of soil samples in residential gardens exceeded current guidelines for lead content, with significant racial disparities affecting soil lead exposure risk. The study highlights the need for targeted outreach programs to prevent lead exposure in residential areas.

Health risk assessment based on source identification of heavy metals: A case study of Beiyun River, China

Huihui Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, Beiyun River was used as an example to quantitatively identify pollution sources and assess pollution source-oriented health risks related to heavy metals. The results showed that heavy metal pollution in the midstream and downstream of Beiyun River is more serious, with arsenic and nickel posing serious health risks to local residents. Industrial activities were identified as the largest contributor to heavy metal pollution in Beiyun River. The findings provide important insights for the precise control of pollution sources to improve water environment management in the basin.
