A citizen science approach to identifying trace metal contamination risks in urban gardens

Mark Patrick Taylor et al.

Summary: VegeSafe program, launched in 2013, helps Australians concerned about soil contaminants by analyzing garden soils for trace metals at little to no cost. The response was overwhelming, with 17,256 soils submitted from 3,609 homes, revealing sobering results about lead contamination in urban soils.Participants showed better understanding of contaminants and a sense of safety in their home environment, with many taking remedial action based on their results.
