Association between 30-day readmission rates and health information technology capabilities in US hospitals

Gerald Elysee et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between specific health IT capabilities adopted by hospitals and hospital-level risk-standardized readmission rates (RSRRs). The findings suggest that improving patient engagement capabilities, such as providing direct access to electronic health records, may lead to a decrease in readmission rates. However, computerized hospital discharge and information exchange capabilities were not found to be associated with readmission rates, possibly due to the quality or timeliness of information transmitted.
