Allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell sheet therapy: A new frontier in drug delivery systems

Kyungsook Kim et al.

Summary: The evolution of drug discovery in the early 20th century saw a shift from focusing on symptom control to pursuing radical cures, with cell therapy emerging as a promising new treatment targeting specific tissues and dynamic signaling environments. Cell delivery methods play a crucial role in realizing the therapeutic potential of cell therapy, especially in the context of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) engraftment and bioactive function. Cell sheet technology is presented as a breakthrough in cell therapy, showcasing therapeutic success in tissue regeneration and discussing its anticipated clinical impacts.

Mesenchymal stem cell spheroids incorporated with collagen and black phosphorus promote osteogenesis of biodegradable hydrogels

Linli Li et al.

Summary: This study assessed the osteogenic responses of MSC spheroids leveraged through a combination of collagen and black phosphorus, showing that collagen and BP at concentrations of 4 μg/mL and 8 μg/mL improved MSC viability and osteogenic ability. Encapsulating these spheroids into different hydrogel scaffolds resulted in enhanced osteogenesis, indicating the potential of collagen and BP incorporated MSC spheroids for developing injectable cellular therapies for bone regeneration.

Functional Properties of Human-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Spheroids: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Sarah Ezquerra et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are adult multi-potent cells that show great potential for therapeutic applications, especially when assembled into spheroids. Research has indicated enhanced properties of MSC spheroids compared to monolayer 2D cultures, including stemness, angiogenesis, differentiation potential, cytokine secretion, paracrine and immunomodulatory effects. Initial studies suggest that using MSC spheroids in vivo can improve therapeutic effects, but further research and clinical trials are necessary to confirm their efficacy.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are valuable for cell-based therapies due to their differentiation and immunomodulatory capabilities, but prolonged in vitro culture may diminish these properties. Studies have focused on optimizing culture protocols to preserve MSC phenotype and functionality during early expansion phases.
