Light echos and coherent autocorrelations in a black hole spacetime

Paul M. Chesler et al.

Summary: The Event Horizon Telescope has produced the first images of a black hole by synthesizing complex electric field measurements from telescopes across the Earth. However, the unique properties of black holes, including multiple path propagation introducing spatial and temporal correlations, make it currently infeasible to detect multi-path propagation near a black hole using the coherent electric field autocorrelation.

More axions from strings

Marco Gorghetto et al.

Summary: Clear evidence of scaling violations in the contribution to QCD axion dark matter abundance from string defects is found, suggesting a large number of axions from strings. Nonlinearities around the QCD scale are shown to play a crucial role in determining the final abundance, resulting in a substantially stronger lower bound on the QCD axion mass in the post-inflationary scenario compared to the naive estimate from misalignment.

Black Hole Glimmer Signatures of Mass, Spin, and Inclination

George N. Wong

Summary: The article discusses the gravitational lensing near a black hole, where light rays can circle the event horizon multiple times, creating black hole glimmer. By examining how photons arrive at different locations in the image plane, the mass and spin of the black hole can be uniquely encoded. A geometrically motivated treatment of Kerr glimmer is provided, with numerical evaluation for simple models, showing that glimmer can be measured in finite-resolution observations. Potential measurement methods and implications for tests of the Kerr hypothesis are also discussed.

CMB birefringence from ultralight-axion string networks

Mudit Jain et al.

Summary: Studying the birefringence of CMB photons passing through axion string loops can provide valuable information about axion-photon coupling and string network structure. The analysis reveals a characteristic angular scale set by theta(min) and a peak in the birefringence power spectrum around l(p) similar to 1/theta(min). An additional scale, controlled by the axion's mass, is introduced if the string network collapses before today.

Summary: Through simulations of accreting black holes, it is found that subtracting linear polarization can enhance the photon ring feature, leading to precise measurements of black hole mass and spin.

Photon ring autocorrelations

Shahar Hadar et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel observable, the two-point correlation function of intensity fluctuations on the photon ring, which exhibits a universal, self-similar structure. The peaks in this function encode statistical properties of fluctuations in the source, while the locations and heights of the peaks are determined purely by the black hole parameters. This method could potentially provide estimates of black hole mass and spin and could be achieved through interferometric imaging with improvements to the Event Horizon Telescope.

Probing the black hole metric: Black hole shadows and binary black-hole inspirals

Dimitrios Psaltis et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the potential upper bounds on black-hole metric deviations based on observations of black-hole shadows and binary black-hole inspirals. The study finds no evidence for deviations from the Kerr metric within the 8 orders of magnitude in mass and 16 orders in curvature spanned by the black holes. Future discoveries of coalescing black-hole binaries with low-mass components may help break the degeneracy between deviation parameters.

Approach to scaling in axion string networks

Mark Hindmarsh et al.

Summary: The study reveals that scaling in axion string networks in the radiation era can be well described by a two-parameter velocity-one-scale (VOS) model, with the parameters being insensitive to the initial state of the network. The simulations, even starting far from the fixed point, are accounted for by the VOS model with certain values for the parameters.

Spinning black holes as cosmic string factories

Hengrui Xing et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the evolution of a cosmic string loop captured by a massive black hole, leading to a nearly-periodic, non-self-intersecting orbit. The evolution is mathematically equivalent to a continuous deformation of an auxiliary closed curve in 3D space, with competing effects of loop growth and decay. Asymptotic states of the evolution, strong emitters of gravitational waves, are explored, as well as the influence of gravitational waves emission, black hole mass, and potential loop captures by primordial black holes.

Geometric optics in the presence of axionlike particles in curved spacetime

Dominik J. Schwarz et al.

Summary: In curved spacetime, the phenomenon of achromatic birefringence is the only difference when light can be described using geometric optics in the presence of axionic fields. This interaction does not affect redshift, distance estimates, shear, and magnification caused by gravitational lensing.
