Salt Stress in Brassica: Effects, Tolerance Mechanisms, and Management

Babar Shahzad et al.

Summary: The Brassica species are negatively affected by salt stress, which disrupts their growth and development. However, they exhibit tolerance mechanisms such as organic and inorganic osmolyte accumulation and efficient ion exclusion, with recent studies highlighting the role of ROS in enhancing salt stress tolerance.

Targeted plant improvement through genome editing: from laboratory to field

Dragana Miladinovic et al.

Summary: Genome editing technologies have revolutionized plant biology, offering solutions to challenges in plant architecture, food security, nutrient content, environmental adaptation, disease resistance, and production of plant-based materials. The efficiency of site-specific genome editing in plants, with a powerful toolbox of molecular scissors, allows for tailored approaches to plant breeding strategies. The synergies of genome editing with other technological platforms are leading to an exciting era of post-genomic plant research and production, demonstrating the importance of science, technology, and tools in meeting current and future challenges in agriculture.

Targeting salt stress coping mechanisms for stress tolerance in Brassica: A research perspective

Adnan Noor Shah et al.

Summary: The Brassica genus consists of various cultivated species with economic importance, facing salt stress as a significant problem causing losses in growth and yield. Different species exhibit varying levels of salt tolerance mechanisms, such as the role of neurotransmitters and ion channel regulation. Agronomic strategies have also been discussed to alleviate salt stress severity in Brassica species.

A Plant Based Modified Biostimulant (Copper Chlorophyllin), Mediates Defense Response in Arabidopsis thaliana under Salinity Stress

Md Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: The study elucidated the protective mechanism of copper chlorophyllin (Cu-chl), a PB, under salinity stress, primarily by decreasing oxidative stress through modulating cellular H2O2 levels. Cu-chl treated plants increased tolerance to oxidative stress imposed by an herbicide, suggesting a protective role against various sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS). RNA-Seq analysis of Cu-chl treated Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings subjected to salt stress identified genes involved in ROS detoxification, and cellular growth.

Ascophyllum nodosum Based Extracts Counteract Salinity Stress in Tomato by Remodeling Leaf Nitrogen Metabolism

Emilia Dell'Aversana et al.

Summary: Biostimulants have been widely used in agriculture as growth enhancers and stress protectants. This study investigates how the modulation of nitrogen metabolites and potassium levels by biostimulants can mediate physiological mechanisms in response to salt or osmotic stress. Reshaping of amino acid metabolism is found to play a key role in coordinating ion homeostasis, osmotic adjustment, and scavenging of reactive oxygen species under increased osmotic stress. The Superfifty biostimulant shows potential for untangling nitrogen metabolism dynamics in response to salinity and osmotic stress.

Identification of no pollen 1 provides a candidate gene for heterosis utilization in foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.)

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new male-sterility gene SiNP1 was identified in foxtail millet by analyzing a male-sterile mutant sinp1, which encodes a putative glucose-methanol-choline oxidoreductase affecting pollen wall development. Gene editing and metabolome analysis further revealed key metabolic pathways were disrupted in the sinp1 mutant.
