Chitosan and postharvest decay of fresh fruit: Meta-analysis of disease control and antimicrobial and eliciting activities

Summary: Studies have shown that 1% chitosan significantly reduces postharvest disease incidence and in vitro mycelium growth of fungal pathogens, while increasing activities of plant defense-related enzymes. This systematic review confirms the multiple mechanisms of action of chitosan, making it a model plant protection biopolymer for sustainable control of postharvest decay of fresh fruit.

Recent advances in the use of edible coatings for preservation of avocados: A review

Summary: This paper reviews recent advances and trends in the use of edible coatings as a safe alternative to preserve and extend avocado shelf-life. Edible biopolymer coatings have gained considerable attention due to their ability to extend fruit and vegetable shelf-life, with nonactive coatings forming a physical barrier and active coatings containing supplementary ingredients with additional properties like antioxidant and antifungal activity.

Starch Edible Films/Coatings Added with Carvacrol and Thymol: In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of thymol and carvacrol against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in edible films and coatings. In vitro evaluation showed MIC values of the compounds at different pH levels, with additive effects observed in binary mixtures. In vivo evaluation on mango and papaya demonstrated delayed fruit ripening and reduced disease symptoms, indicating the potential of thymol and carvacrol in controlling anthracnose.

Control of mango decay using antifungal sachets containing of thyme oil/modified starch/agave fructans microcapsules

Summary: The aim of this study was to control phytopathogens associated with mango decay by exposing them to antifungal thyme oil-starch/agave fructans microcapsules in Nylon sachets. Results showed that different doses of the microcapsules effectively inhibited the growth of pathogens and reduced the incidence and severity of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in mango.
