The one hundred year journey of the genus Brucella (Meyer and Shaw 1920)

Edgardo Moreno

Summary: The genus Brucella, initially described in 1920, has evolved over the years with the discovery of new species and a rejection of the proposal suggesting all belonged to a single species. Its genetic characteristics and relationship with Alphaproteobacteria have aided in the identification of virulence factors and evolutionary relationships within the group. Its 100-year history reflects ongoing scientific efforts and challenges in understanding brucellosis.

Glucose Oxidation to Pyruvate Is Not Essential for Brucella suis Biovar 5 Virulence in the Mouse Model

Leticia Lazaro-Anton et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sugar metabolism pathways in Brucella suis biovar 5, showing that it utilizes both the Pentose Phosphate shunt and the Entner-Doudoroff pathway. Mutants lacking key enzymes in these pathways displayed reduced growth rates, indicating the importance of these pathways for bacterial growth. However, the triple mutant was still able to multiply within host cells, suggesting anabolic use of other pathways in Brucella suis biovar 5.
