A new virus of the family Tombusviridae infecting sugarcane

Muhammad N. Tahir et al.

Summary: A sugarcane accession from South Africa with mosaic symptoms was found to be infected with two known sugarcane viruses and a contig resembling umbra-like viruses of the family Tombusviridae. The viral contig sequence was confirmed through cloning and Sanger sequencing, revealing the presence of four open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis showed that this virus clusters with other umbra-like viruses of the family Tombusviridae.

Molecular interactions of plant viral satellites

Uzma Badar et al.

Summary: Plant viral satellites, as a type of subviral agents, have small genomes composed of RNA or DNA molecules, and require the presence of helper viruses for replication and encapsidation. The unique and complex molecular interactions of these satellites are largely influenced by specific host plants and helper viruses. Circularized and linear forms of satellite RNA play important roles in exacerbating or alleviating symptoms in plants infected by helper viruses.
