Evolution of Embryo Implantation Was Enabled by the Origin of Decidual Stromal Cells in Eutherian Mammals

Arun R. Chavan et al.

Summary: Evolutionary mechanism of ancestral inflammatory response transformed into embryo implantation in the eutherian lineage was elucidated by comparative study of several mammalian species. Decidual stromal cells were proposed to mediate the suppression of detrimental modules in the inflammatory response. The results provide a mechanistic understanding of early stages in the evolution of eutherian pregnancy.

The lncRNA NEAT1 promotes the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and metastasis of osteosarcoma cells by sponging miR-483 to upregulate STAT3 expression

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the NEAT1/miR-483/STAT3 axis plays an important role in regulating the metastasis of osteosarcoma. Potential therapeutic targeting of this axis could have beneficial effects on osteosarcoma treatment in the future.

Evolutionary transcriptomics implicates HAND2 in the origins of implantation and regulation of gestation length

Mirna Marinic et al.

Summary: The evolutionary genes evolved at the maternal-fetal interface in Eutherian mammals play essential roles in the evolution of pregnancy and are associated with immunological disorders and preterm birth. Among these genes, HAND2 regulates a distinct set of genes in endometrial stromal fibroblasts, promoting migration of natural killer cells and extravillous cytotrophoblasts. These findings connect HAND2 expression at the maternal-fetal interface with evolution of implantation and gestational regulation, and preterm birth.

Capture and metabolomic analysis of the human endometrial epithelial organoid secretome

Constantine A. Simintiras et al.

Summary: The study developed a high-throughput method for isolating intraorganoid fluid (IOF) from human endometrial epithelial organoids, revealing distinct biochemical differences between IOF and extraorganoid fluid (EOF). This has the potential to enhance our understanding of uterine fluid composition and regulation.

Pluripotent stem cell-derived endometrial stromal fibroblasts in a cyclic, hormone-responsive, coculture model of human decidua

Virginia Chu Cheung et al.

Summary: This study reports a protocol for differentiating human pluripotent stem cells into endometrial stromal fibroblasts that can undergo decidualization and generate organoids for studying decidualization. This advancement allows for mechanistic studies of the cyclic responses characteristic of the human endometrium.

Characterization of highly proliferative decidual precursor cells during the window of implantation in human endometrium

Maria Diniz-da-Costa et al.

Summary: The study identifies a highly proliferative population of mesenchymal cells (hPMC) in midluteal human endometrium, potentially serving as novel decidual precursors; hPMC differ from endometrial stromal cells in the expression of genes for prolactin and other decidual transcription factors, and show signs of differentiation into a decidual subpopulation discovered in early pregnancy; recurrent pregnancy loss is associated with depletion of hPMC.
