Effects of ambient temperature on regulated gaseous and particulate emissions from gasoline-, E10-and M15-fueled vehicles

Rencheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature on gaseous and particulate emissions from traditional and alcohol gasolines. Results showed that particulate emissions increased significantly with decreased temperature, and the advantages of E10 and M15 in controlling particulate emissions declined as the ambient temperature decreased.

Characterizing start emissions of gasoline vehicles and the seasonal, diurnal and spatial variabilities in China

Yifan Wen et al.

Summary: This study focused on measuring start emissions of gaseous pollutants and solid particle number from gasoline light-duty passenger vehicles in China, with a particular emphasis on the impact of cold-start conditions. The results showed that cold-start phase contributes significantly to total tailpipe emissions, and that emissions vary by pollutant, vehicle technology, and environmental conditions. The study also revealed seasonal, diurnal, and spatial variabilities in LDPV emissions, providing valuable insights for emission inventory and air quality simulation improvements.

Ammonia Emissions in SI Engines Fueled with LPG

Andrzej Zoltowski et al.

Summary: The article discusses the production of ammonia in the exhaust after-treatment systems of light-duty vehicles, and the potential harm it may cause to human health. Research on the impact of air-fuel ratio regulation and engine operating parameters on NH3 concentration is presented, highlighting that excessive NH3 emissions may occur under certain conditions and urging for regulations to limit these pollutants.

Characterizing the toxic gaseous emissions of gasoline and diesel vehicles based on a real-world on-road investigation

Lanyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The increasing production and population of motor vehicles in China have worsened air pollution, with a focus needed on targeted control measures. Research shows that emissions from medium-duty diesel vehicles are significantly higher than those from light-duty gasoline vehicles, requiring emphasis on controlling diesel vehicle emissions. The effects of speed and acceleration on emissions are nonlinear, varying between vehicle types in mountainous regions.

Regional Scale Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Air Quality: Gaseous Pollutants in the Po Valley, Northern Italy

Giovanni Lonati et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the reduced atmospheric emissions due to the COVID-19 lockdown have positively impacted the ambient air quality in the Po Valley of Northern Italy, particularly for NO2 and benzene pollutants, while the concentration of ammonia did not show significant changes. The results highlight the important role of traffic emissions in NO2 and benzene ambient levels in the Po Valley.

Analysis of real-driving emissions from light-duty gasoline vehicles: A comparison of different evaluation methods with considering cold-start emissions

Lingjian Chen et al.

Summary: The cold-start emissions from road vehicles are a significant source of air pollution, but there is controversy on how to evaluate them in real driving emission tests. The Commission Regulation has adopted the MAW method and the CA method, but both have been found to have flaws in processing RDE data. Dividing the RDE test into cold-start and non-cold-start phases for evaluation using different methods can improve the consistency of test results.

An Overview of Lean Exhaust deNOx Aftertreatment Technologies and NOx Emission Regulations in the European Union

Tommaso Selleri et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent advances in the management of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from internal combustion engines of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, addressing both technical and legal aspects. It focuses on the interaction between new legislation imposing stricter pollutant emission limits and new technologies developed to meet these restrictions. Experimental data shows that new technologies have significantly reduced NOx emissions in Diesel light-duty vehicles over the past 20 years, while increasing emissions of NH3 and N2O.

Particle Number Emissions of a Euro 6d-Temp Gasoline Vehicle under Extreme Temperatures and Driving Conditions

Barouch Giechaskiel et al.

Summary: With the introduction of gasoline particulate filters (GPFs), the particle number emissions of gasoline direct-injection (GDI) vehicles have been reduced below the regulatory limit under a wide range of conditions. Dynamic driving may result in slightly higher emissions, but still below the limit. The effectiveness of GPFs in controlling PN emissions has been confirmed by this study.

Energy-efficient heating strategies of diesel oxidation catalyst for low emissions vehicles

Mohammad Reza Hamedi et al.

Summary: Electrically heated catalyst (EHC) is integrated with the exhaust aftertreatment system to reduce cold start emissions. Developing an energy-efficient heating strategy can significantly reduce the time required for catalysts to light-off and improve emission conversion efficiency. Combining electrical and fuel post-injection catalyst heating can benefit from quick catalyst light-off and higher heating efficiency, showing a significant improvement in emissions conversion performance.

Research on ammonia emissions characteristics from light-duty gasoline vehicles

Yingshuai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ammonia emissions characteristics of typical light-duty gasoline vehicles under different ambient temperatures and operating conditions. It was found that ambient temperature, especially during cold starts, significantly influences the emission of ammonia. The catalytic reaction in the TWC produces ammonia as a by-product, leading to a significant increase in ammonia emissions after passing through the catalyst.

Summary: This study examines the impact of sub-zero temperatures and high altitudes on the on-road emissions of three types of vehicles, revealing an increase in CO, NOx, and PN emissions under these conditions. While NOx and PN emissions meet Euro 6d-TEMP standards, PN emissions from gasoline vehicles can be high in certain circumstances, raising concerns regarding the current regulations.
