A tale of two hearth sites: Neolithic and intermittent mid to late Holocene occupations in the Jubbah oasis, northern Saudi Arabia

Maria Guagnin et al.

Summary: Excavations of two multi-period hearth sites in the Jebel Oraf palaeolake basin in the Arabian sand seas increase our knowledge of these sites. Radiocarbon dating and lithic assemblages indicate that the majority of hearths were in use in the second half of the 6th millennium BCE, primarily for cooking meat from hunted wildlife. The sites show evidence of early use of metal and technological connections in the wider region.

Changes in the large carnivore community structure of the Judean Desert in connection to Holocene human settlement dynamics

Ignacio A. Lazagabaster et al.

Summary: Historical anthropogenic impacts have led to changes in the faunal communities, with a decrease in Arabian leopards and an increase in Syrian striped hyenas in the Judean Desert. The decline in leopards was attributed to hunting pressure and aridification, while the spread of hyenas was due to the introduction of domestic animals and settlement refuse. The recent extinction of leopards in the region signifies the culmination of human impact on the ecosystem during the late Holocene.
