Trans-limonene dioxide, a promising bio-based epoxy monomer

Louis Schutz et al.

Summary: The natural terpene (R)-limonene can be converted into a difunctional epoxy monomer called limonene dioxide (LDO) through epoxidation. Among the isomers of LDO, trans-LDO exhibits higher reactivity compared to cis-LDO, making it a promising bio-based alternative to petroleum-based epoxy monomers. The difference in reactivity between cis and trans isomers was confirmed through Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopic analysis and preparation of epoxy formulations.
