Use of membranes for the treatment and reuse of water from the pre-cooling system of chicken carcasses

Cristiane M. Marchesi et al.

Summary: Poultry processing plants generate large amounts of wastewater during production, and carcass chilling is an important step in this process. This study successfully regenerated the wastewater of the pre-chiller tank using polymeric membranes of different pore sizes, achieving the goal of wastewater reuse.

Treatment of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater (PSW) Using a Pretreatment Stage, an Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor (EGSB), and a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

Honeil Basile Meyo et al.

Summary: This study successfully treated poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW) by combining a biological pretreatment stage, an expanded granular sludge bed reactor (EGSB), and a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The system achieved contaminant removal rates exceeding 97%, meeting the discharge standards set by the City of Cape Town (CoCT). The EGSB and MBR played key roles in reducing concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and fats, oil, and grease (FOG) to acceptable levels, demonstrating an effective and low-cost method for treating medium- to high-strength wastewater.

Performance of dynamic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (DAnMBR) with phase separation in treating high strength food processing wastewater

Siti Baizurah Mahat et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of using low-cost dynamic membranes to treat food processing wastewater, with the anaerobic DM bioreactor showing stable performance at an OLR of 5.0 g COD/L day. Significant correlation between COD removal through acidogenesis and methanogenesis at different OLR levels indicates the beneficial impact on methanogenic archaea activity. The DM fouling was attributed to the release of soluble microbial products and extracellular polymeric substances, leading to improved filtration resistance.
