The role of low-temperature 18O exchange in the isotopic evolution of deep subsurface fluids

Oliver Warr et al.

Summary: Fractures in crystalline Precambrian rocks around the world contain Ca-Na-Cl fluids with high concentrations of dissolved reduced gases, whose isotopic values typically plot above the Global Meteoric Water Line. These fluids are primarily produced through water-rock alteration reactions, leading to covariation of isotopic values. A global study reveals that the most saline end-member fluids in Precambrian settings exhibit common isotopic signatures, despite differences in geologic settings.
