The role of landscape morphology on soil moisture variability in semi-arid ecosystems

Ankur Srivastava et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were used to analyze the impact of different landform morphologies on soil moisture variability in semi-arid ecosystems, showing that landscapes dominated by fluvial erosion processes promote higher spatial soil moisture variability than those dominated by diffusive erosion processes, especially in regions with high spatial variability of incoming solar radiation and precipitation.

Deriving Planform Morphology and Vegetation Coverage From Remote Sensing to Support River Management Applications

Richard J. Boothroyd et al.

Summary: The use of remotely sensed information for monitoring riverine hydro-morpho-biodynamics is growing due to the availability of big geospatial data and access to platforms supporting multi-temporal analyses. Results from a study on a reach of the Po River in Italy using satellite imagery showed that most parts of the river remained stable, with a loss of planform complexity near former secondary channels. Seasonal variation in vegetation coverage was found to potentially influence local hydrodynamics and flood risk.

Evidence of Range Shifts in Riparian Plant Assemblages in Response to Multidecadal Streamflow Declines

Helen A. White et al.

Summary: In riparian zones of southwest Western Australia, changes in streamflow due to drying climate have different impacts on immature tree frequencies depending on the geographic range of the species. This suggests that riparian species may experience range contractions or expansions. Meanwhile, the river may act as a buffer for upland species.
