Increasing risk of meteorological drought in the Lake Urmia basin under climate change: Introducing the precipitation-temperature deciles index

Mohammad Sadegh Abbasian et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel framework to characterize meteorological drought conditions and predicts future climate trends in the Lake Urmia basin in Iran. Results indicate that the region is projected to become drier and hotter in the future, leading to an increase in dry/hot months and a decrease in precipitation, which is unfavorable for agricultural activities and the revival of the endangered lake.

Characterizing non-stationary compound extreme events in a changing climate based on large-ensemble climate simulations

Harsimrenjit Singh et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the dependence structure of temperature-precipitation compound events in Canada using different datasets and copula models. It found that bias-corrected climate simulations better represent extreme values compared to raw model outputs. Considering the dependence structure reduced joint return periods significantly, especially in winter and summer, highlighting the importance of analyzing compound extremes rather than individual temperature and precipitation extremes. The non-stationarity of the dependence structure under climate change could play a significant role in future compound extreme events.

A flood risk assessment framework for interdependent infrastructure systems in coastal environments

Mohammad Reza Najafi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a network-based framework for assessing compound flood risks in coastal environments. By simulating rainfall, river, and coastal flood characteristics, it explores the interdependencies among infrastructure systems and prioritizes resource allocation based on associated risks.

Spatial and temporal changes in climate extremes over northwestern North America: the influence of internal climate variability and external forcing

Mohammad Hasan Mahmoudi et al.

Summary: Increases in extreme temperature and precipitation events are projected in northwestern North America due to climate change, with internal climate variability playing a significant role in precipitation trends. Higher elevations in the region show stronger forcing signals for precipitation-based indices compared to other areas.

Estimating the probability of compound floods in estuarine regions

Wenyan Wu et al.

Summary: The study compares different methods for estimating flood risk in estuarine regions, including traditional univariate flood frequency analysis and multivariate frequency analysis, and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages through a practical case study. Theoretical understanding and findings from the case study provide guidance for selecting methods for estuarine flood probability estimation.
