Four priority areas to advance invasion science in the face of rapid environmental change

Anthony Ricciardi et al.

Summary: Unprecedented rates of introduction and spread of non-native species pose challenges to biodiversity, natural resource management, regional economies, and human health. Current biosecurity efforts are failing to keep pace with globalization, revealing gaps in understanding and response to invasions. Four priority areas for advancing invasion science include developing a comprehensive framework for predicting non-native species behavior, understanding synergistic effects of multiple stressors, addressing taxonomic impediments, and emphasizing internationally cooperative biosecurity strategies.

Microplastic pollution in perch (Perca fluviatilis, Linnaeus 1758) from Italian south-alpine lakes

Silvia Galafassi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastic particles in the digestive system of perch in four south-alpine lakes and found that 86% of the analyzed specimens contained MPs. Despite the high number of ingested MPs, fish health was not affected, but the fullness index showed a potential interference with feeding activity.

Seasonal changes in depth position and temperature of European catfish (Silurus glanis) tracked by acoustic telemetry in the Danube River

Mirjana B. Lenhardt et al.

Summary: A giant European catfish was caught downstream of Iron Gate II hydropower dam on the Danube River and monitored for roughly 2 years using an ultrasonic transmitter. The study showed that the catfish exhibited high site fidelity and changes in depth may be related to feeding and spawning migration, with obstacles such as the hydropower dam and shiplock impacting its upstream movement. Telemetry studies are important for understanding habitat requirements and developing conservation strategies for fish resources.

Biological and trophic consequences of genetic introgression between endemic and invasive Barbus fishes

Vanessa De Santis et al.

Summary: Genetic introgression of an invasive congener with native species can lead to substantial ecological consequences, including the potential for cascading effects. This study found differences in biological traits, trophic ecology, and population demographic structure in native barbel populations introgressed with the invasive European barbel species.

A global-scale screening of non-native aquatic organisms to identify potentially invasive species under current and future climate conditions

Lorenzo Vilizzi et al.

Summary: A global approach is needed to identify invasive non-native species that pose a high risk to native species and ecosystems. By using a multi-lingual decision-support tool, assessors can classify aquatic organisms into different risk categories under current and predicted climate conditions, aiding in decision-making for management and policy.
