Protection of Residual Renal Function and Nutritional Treatment: First Step Strategy for Reduction of Uremic Toxins in End-Stage Kidney Disease Patients

Adamasco Cupisti et al.

Summary: In patients with advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), hemodialysis treatment accelerates the loss of residual kidney function and increases protein intake, leading to the retention of uremic toxins. Protecting residual kidney function, implementing a low protein diet on non-dialysis days, and gradually transitioning to kidney replacement therapy (KRT) can be effective strategies to reduce the concentration of uremic toxins in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
