Applicability analysis of multiple precipitation products in the Qaidam Basin, Northwestern China

Shanshan Qi et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the accuracy of three precipitation products in the Qaidam Basin against observed data. MSWEP product shows the highest accuracy at annual and monthly scales, followed by GPM product. TRMM product only exhibits correlation at the monthly scale and has abnormal values in the wet season. Additionally, GPM product has superior accuracy to TRMM but lacks detection capability in mountainous areas. The average error of each precipitation product is smaller at meteorological stations compared to hydrological stations.

Water, water, but not everywhere: analysis of shrinking water bodies using open access satellite data

Sachit Mahajan et al.

Summary: Water is essential for life and sustainable development. Monitoring and identifying changes in water resources can be challenging, especially in countries with limited resources. However, advancements in technology and the availability of open-access satellite data offer opportunities to strengthen monitoring capabilities and assist decision-makers in understanding water resource changes.

Mapping inter- and intra-annual dynamics in water surface area of the Tonle Sap Lake with Landsat time-series and water level data

Zhenkui Gu et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for water monitoring based on multi-temporal Landsat images, combined with LEM to effectively remove cloud cover effects, for long-term monitoring of Tonle Sap Lake water areas. The results show that over the past 30 years, there has been no significant change in the water area of Tonle Sap Lake.

Estimating seasonal water budgets in global lakes by using multi-source remote sensing measurements

Tan Chen et al.

Summary: This study estimated the seasonal water storage variation of 463 lakes and reservoirs worldwide, finding that North American and African basins have relatively large seasonal water storage changes globally. The latitudinal zonality of LWSsc is significant, concentrated between 30 degrees N and 60 degrees N in the northern hemisphere and between the equator and 30 degrees S in the southern hemisphere.

The Decrease in Lake Numbers and Areas in Central Asia Investigated Using a Landsat-Derived Water Dataset

Xianghong Che et al.

Summary: Central Asia, despite having a strong continental climate, is home to thousands of lakes critical for ecosystems and human welfare, but has seen significant declines in both the number and area of lakes between 2000 and 2015. Factors such as evaporation and decreased snowmelt have led to decreases in water areas of lakes, particularly in the Aral Sea and Tengiz Lake.

Precipitation Drives the NDVI Distribution on the Tibetan Plateau While High Warming Rates May Intensify Its Ecological Droughts

Kewei Jiao et al.

Summary: Climate change has significantly impacted the ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau, affecting vegetation growth processes and cover features. Precipitation played a dominant role in NDVI across the plateau, while temperature had a significant impact in specific regions, particularly influenced by minimum temperature. Warmer temperatures adversely affected vegetation growth in some arid and semiarid areas, highlighting the importance of understanding the spatial variations and climatic determinants on vegetation dynamics in the region.
