Assessment of FY-4A and Himawari-8 Cloud Top Height Retrieval through Comparison with Ground-Based Millimeter Radar at Sites in Tibet and Beijing

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the accuracy of CTH retrieval from FY-4A and Himawari-8 satellites by comparing them with ground-based millimeter radar data at YBJ and IAP in China. Himawari-8 missed more CTHs at night than FY-4A, especially at YBJ. The difference in CTH between the satellites and radar is larger at IAP compared to YBJ, with both satellites showing better performance for mid-level and low-level clouds. The CTHD decreases as cloud depth increases at both sites, with little impact from aerosol concentration and an increase in CTHD with surface temperature for high and thin clouds.

Assessment and Error Analysis of Terra-MODIS and MISR Cloud-Top Heights Through Comparison With ISS-CATS Lidar

Arka Mitra et al.

Summary: Cloud-top heights (CTH) records from MISR and MODIS on Terra provide our longest-running single-platform CTH record from a stable orbit. The evaluation of Terra Level 2 CTH record against CATS lidar observations shows that bias and precision of Terra CTH are closely tied to cloud horizontal and vertical heterogeneity, as well as altitude. The uncertainties in MODIS and MISR CTH are related to cloud characteristics, with smaller uncertainties for lower altitude clouds and larger uncertainties for optically thin clouds.
