Developing a site index model for P. Pinaster stands in NW Spain by combining bi-temporal ALS data and environmental data

Juan Guerra-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a site index model for Pinus pinaster Ait. in northwest Spain using bi-temporal ALS data and various environmental variables. The model, based on ALS metrics and environmental factors, provided estimates of site productivity through site quality curves. By testing the GADA formulation derived from Bertalanffy's base model, the study found that it produced the best estimates of dominant height for P. pinaster stands in Galicia. The proposed model requires two sets of ALS data for estimating site-specific parameters, with the use of MARS equations enabling the development of spatially-explicit predictive maps for parameter values.

Fusing simulated GEDI, ICESat-2 and NISAR data for regional aboveground biomass mapping

Carlos Alberto Silva et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-sensor data fusion approach for accurate mapping of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using data from GEDI, ICESat-2, and NISAR missions. Testing in Sonoma County, USA, demonstrates that the fusion framework provides more accurate AGB estimates compared to individual mission data, highlighting opportunities for improved AGB mapping through data fusion.

Monitoring Key Forest Structure Attributes across the Conterminous United States by Integrating GEDI LiDAR Measurements and VIIRS Data

Khaldoun Rishmawi et al.

Summary: Accurate information on global forest distribution and 3D structure is crucial for assessing forest biomass stocks and future terrestrial Carbon sink projections. The GEDI LiDAR sensor provides unprecedented sampling of forest structural properties, with VIIRS data successfully extrapolating GEDI measurements for wall-to-wall forest structure maps in the conterminous US. Validation results demonstrate the robustness of the VIIRS data for monitoring forest structural changes over large areas.

Using GEDI lidar data and airborne laser scanning to assess height growth dynamics in fast-growing species: a showcase in Spain

Juan Guerra-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study used GEDI statistics and nationwide ALS surveys to estimate forest dynamics in three fast-growing forest ecosystems in Northwest Spain. Results showed that the spatio-temporal assessment allowed for large-scale detection of harvests, and GEDI data provided valuable insights for forest industry operations.

Using enhanced data co-registration to update Spanish National Forest Inventories (NFI) and to reduce training data under LiDAR-assisted inference

A. Pascual et al.

Summary: By upgrading NFI plot positions using commercial-grade GNSS, the accuracy of ABA models was improved, resulting in a decrease in RMSE error and variability. The upgraded ABA models required fewer training sample plots and helped control the variability of errors.
