Mapping cropping intensity in Huaihe basin using phenology algorithm, all Sentinel-2 and Landsat images in Google Earth Engine

Li Pan et al.

Summary: The study developed an algorithm incorporating crop phenology on the GEE platform to accurately map cropping intensity in the Huaihe basin in 2018. Results showed that single cropping, double cropping, and triple cropping respectively accounted for 41.6%, 57.7%, and 0.7% of the total cultivated area, with high accuracy.

Crop Type and Land Cover Mapping in Northern Malawi Using the Integration of Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope Satellite Data

Daniel Kpienbaareh et al.

Summary: Mapping crop types and land cover in smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa is challenging due to data costs, cloud cover, and temporal resolution limitations of satellite data. By integrating data from sensors with different spectral characteristics and temporal resolutions, detailed crop type and land cover maps can be effectively produced. The fusion of radar data with optical data in cloud-dense and resource-poor areas presents an opportunity for operational mapping of crop types and land cover to support decision-making for food security and environmental management.

Operational Coregistration of the Sentinel-2A/B Image Archive Using Multitemporal Landsat Spectral Averages

Summary: Geometric misalignment and multitemporal inconsistency between Landsat and Sentinel-2 data sets require operational coregistration for multitemporal analysis. Modification of the LSReg algorithm enables automatic coregistration of large volumes of Sentinel-2 imagery with Landsat base images, improving geometric consistency and reducing time series noise in Sentinel-2 data sets.

Land use mapping using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series in a heterogeneous landscape in Niger, Sahel

Dario Schulz et al.

Summary: Land use maps are important planning tools for decision makers, especially in challenging sectors like food security and urban planning in regions like the Sahel. Remote sensing imageries are essential for producing such maps, but heterogeneous landscapes in the Sahel can make classification difficult. This study utilized Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 archives to create a high resolution land use map for Niamey, Niger and surrounding areas, showcasing the potential of combining multi-modal imageries and multiple classifiers for accurate mapping. The classifier ensemble map showed superior accuracy compared to existing global land cover products, highlighting the benefits of using different classifiers for mapping a heterogenous environment.

An evaluation of Landsat, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1 and MODIS data for crop type mapping

Xiao-Peng Song et al.

Summary: In this study, the utility of Landsat, Sentinel, and MODIS satellite data for mapping corn and soybean in the United States was evaluated. Results showed that individual satellite/sensor data could reach accuracies of 94.8-96.8%, while combining all data improved accuracy to 97.0%. Landsat was identified as most useful for soybean classification, Sentinel-2 for corn, and optical data were preferred over SAR data.
