The Issue of Groundwater Salinization in Coastal Areas of the Mediterranean Region: A Review

Micol Mastrocicco et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean region is experiencing intensive changes in demographics, socio-cultural dynamics, economics, and the environment, leading to increased pressures on water resources and land consumption. Studies indicate that climate change will have significant impacts on the hydrologic cycle, particularly affecting surface and ground-water resources in coastal areas. Current research focuses on addressing salinization in coastal aquifers and managing groundwater exploitation, with a growing need for further investigation on the effects of climate change.

Simulating Future Groundwater Recharge in Coastal and Inland Catchments

Gianluigi Busico et al.

Summary: Groundwater recharge was quantified using SWAT in coastal and inland hydrological basins in Greece, with accurate calibration and simulation results obtained for the Mouriki and Anthemountas basins. Significant variations in groundwater recharge are predicted in the coastal zone, while variations in the inland catchment of Mouriki are insignificant. Groundwater management strategies, including detailed monitoring and seasonal recharge adjustments, should be implemented in coastal aquifers.

Coastal destruction and unusual wave spectra induced by Typhoon Faxai in 2019

Hitoshi Tamura et al.

Summary: Typhoon Faxai in September 2019 caused extensive damage along the coast of Tokyo Bay, with significant damage concentrated near the Port of Yokohama. Two intriguing phenomena were observed: the concentrated damage in a small area and hazardous waves coming from both the northeast and southeast directions. The study identified wind wave development under slanting fetch conditions and refraction of swell by the Tokyo Submarine Canyon as key factors for the unusual coastal wave spectra observed in the event.
