Modifying Cellulose Acetate Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Improved Oil-Water Separation: Comparison between Sodium and Organo-Montmorillonite as Particle Additives

Micah Belle Marie Yap Ang et al.

Summary: Cellulose acetate mixed-matrix membranes were fabricated using wet-phase inversion method with two types of montmorillonite nanoclays embedded. The addition of nanoclays improved membrane hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, and antifouling property. The modified membrane showed high rejection rates for various oil-in-water emulsions and excellent pure water flux.

Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membrane Via Vapour Induced Phase Separation for Oil/Water Emulsion Filtration

Normi Izati Mat Nawi et al.

Summary: The study explores the fabrication of a PVDF-based membrane using the VIPS method with the addition of PVP as a hydrophilic additive to improve filtration performance. The results show that adding PVP-LiCl enlarges the mean flow pore size of the membrane, leading to enhanced clean water permeability.

Assessment of littered cigarette butt in urban environment, using of new cigarette butt pollution index (CBPI)

Javad Torkashvand et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the quantity and distribution of cigarette butts in urban areas, and defined a Cigarette Butt Pollution Index (CBPI) by considering factors such as CB density, weather conditions, urban characteristics, and distance from groundwater. The findings showed that the average density of cigarette butts in urban areas ranged from 0.01 to 0.51, with significant spatial variation due to urban characteristics such as land use and population density.

Development of Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membrane via Assembly of Tannic Acid and Polyvinylpyrrolidone for Filtration of Oil/Water Emulsion

Normi Izati Mat Nawi et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes customized for oil/water emulsion separation by incorporating assembly of tannic acid (TA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the polymer matrix. The assembly of TA/PVP complexation improved surface hydrophilicity and clean water permeability of the membrane, leading to enhanced performance in oil/water emulsion filtration.

Improving hydraulic permeability, mechanical properties, and chemical functionality of cellulose acetate-based membranes by co-polymerization with tetraethyl orthosilicate and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane

Monica C. Andrade et al.

Summary: By adding tetraethylorthosilicate and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane to the CA casting solution, monophasic hybrid membranes were fabricated, improving hydraulic permeability, rupture elongation, and reducing Young modulus. Intensive cross-linking between CA-silica chains was observed with high propyl-amine contents, reversing the behavior.

Recent Development on Electrospun Nanofiber Membrane for Produced Water Treatment: A review

Nur Syakinah Abd Halim et al.

Summary: Produced water is the largest wastewater generated in oil and gas industry, posing a significant environmental issue and prompting researchers to seek more effective treatment methods. Electrospun nanofiber membrane shows high potential for oily wastewater treatment, but fouling issue and low mechanical strength may impact membrane performance, hence the importance of membrane surface modification methods.
