Effect of polyHIPE porosity on its hydrodynamic properties

Rok Mravljak et al.

Summary: Experimental results demonstrate the pore structure and permeability of polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPE). The pressure drop on polyHIPE is related to the interconnecting pore diameter, while the permeability is linearly correlated with flow-through porosity and independent of porosity.

A mathematical model for pH-responsive ionically crosslinked TEMPO nanocellulose hydrogel design in drug delivery systems

Tilen Kopac et al.

Summary: Ionically crosslinked hydrogels based on TEMPO nanocelullose and alginate were prepared to develop a generalized pH value, temperature and biopolymer concentration dependent mathematical model. The research focused on the effects of hydrogen bonds in the mathematical model, especially in the low crosslink densities of TEMPO nanocellulose hydrogel in acidic medium. Comparisons were made with alginate hydrogels as samples with less significant hydrogel bonds effect. The study discussed the mechanisms of swelling and shrinkage, as well as the influence of substituent groups, ionic interactions, and hydrogen bonds on different pH mediums.

Summary: Biomaterials, such as hydrogels, have been utilized for controlled drug release, with potential applications in wound dressings. This study successfully incorporated bacteriophage into a PVA hydrogel and evaluated its antimicrobial effectiveness against E. coli O157:H7. The PVA-phage hydrogel showed greater swelling and inhibition zone compared to the PVA-control, demonstrating promising results for future treatment of skin infections.
