Mineralized Hydrogels Induce Bone Regeneration in Critical Size Cranial Defects

Xinchen Wu et al.

Summary: Sequential mineralization allows integration of minerals into the 3D structure of hydrogels, with collagen-based hydrogels mineralized over 10 cycles. The compressive modulus of the gels increases significantly after mineralization for 30 minutes and 24 hours, with XRD and FTIR analyses indicating mainly hydroxyapatite minerals. In vitro experiments show increased gene expression and biocompatibility, with in vivo studies demonstrating successful bone regeneration. These results highlight the potential of sequentially mineralized hydrogel scaffolds for bone repair and regeneration.

Bioactivity reinforced surface patch bound collagen-pectin hydrogel

Himansh Goel et al.

Summary: The CPBG hydrogel forms a hybrid crosslinked network through surface patch interactions, with BG particles acting as pseudo crosslink junctions. In vitro bioactivity tests show bone-like hydroxyapatite microcrystals on its surface, and drug release kinetics follow the Fiddan mechanism.

In situ mechanical reinforcement of polymer hydrogels via metal-coordinated crosslink mineralization

Sungjin Kim et al.

Summary: Biological organic-inorganic materials, such as self-assembling metal-reinforced mussel holdfast threads, remain a popular source of inspiration for materials design and engineering. Here the authors show that metal-coordinate polymer networks can be utilized as simple composite scaffolds for direct in situ crosslink mineralization.

Hybrid gelatin/oxidized chondroitin sulfate hydrogels incorporating bioactive glass nanoparticles with enhanced mechanical properties, mineralization, and osteogenic differentiation

Lei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, hybrid gelatin/oxidized chondroitin sulfate hydrogels incorporating mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles were developed for bone regeneration. The addition of MBGNs enhanced the mechanical properties and accelerated gelation, while also promoting proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of stem cells in vitro and bone defect restoration in vivo. These hybrid hydrogels show promising potential as injectable biomaterials or scaffolds for bone regeneration applications.
