Recent trends in Medicare utilization and surgeon reimbursement for shoulder arthroplasty

Cesar D. Lopez et al.

Summary: The study found that total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) volume and per capita utilization have significantly increased since 2012, but Medicare Part B reimbursements to surgeons have continued to fall, especially after the adoption of bundled-payment models. Efforts for cost containment still focus on Medicare reimbursements to surgeons, while other expenditures such as hospital payments and operational costs also need to be evaluated as part of the transition to value-based health care.
