The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB): A Quick and Useful Tool for Fall Risk Stratification Among Older Primary Care Patients

Sarah A. Welch et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of SPPB in assessing fall risk in older adults, finding that both SPPB and its components can independently predict fall risk. Over a 4-year follow-up period, low total baseline SPPB and gait time performances predicted higher fall risk. Stratifying the sample by the STEADI model revealed that those with the lowest SPPB scores and a positive fall risk screen had the highest fall risk.

Young and Restless, Old and Focused: Age-Differences in Mind-Wandering Frequency and Phenomenology

Catherine N. Moran et al.

Summary: This study found that with age, there is a decrease in the frequency and phenomenology of mind-wandering, while task accuracy remains unaffected. Older adults reduce unintentional mind-wandering by having less anxiety and higher task engagement. According to the exploitation/exploration framework, younger adults are more inclined to intentionally mind-wander, while older adults focus more on tasks and have less bias towards exploration of the mind-wandering space.
