Global Change and Forest Disturbances in the Mediterranean Basin: Breakthroughs, Knowledge Gaps, and Recommendations

Josep Penuelas et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean Basin are facing large direct and indirect impacts of increasing drought conditions, leading to changes in surface and distribution areas as well as threats to their maintenance. Human activities, over-exploitation, pest expansion, fires, soil degradation, and inadequate management policies have contributed to the regression and dieback of forests in the region. Effective management interventions and research are necessary to counteract these impacts and conserve the biodiversity and health of Mediterranean forests in the face of climate change.

Fuel load, stand structure, and understory species composition following prescribed fire in an old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forest

David Cowman et al.

Summary: Research shows that prescribed burning in old-growth redwood forests can significantly reduce live and dead surface fuels, with minimal impact on canopy trees and understory herbaceous species.
