Comparative studies on speciation: 30 years since Coyne and Orr

Daniel R. Matute et al.

Summary: Population divergence and speciation processes have been central questions in evolutionary biology, with long-standing research providing valuable insights into species formation. Revisiting the work of Coyne and Orr, we find both well-supported and potentially less robust results, prompting a focus on novel methods and data for future research in speciation. The field shows promise for continued advancement, despite its current bias towards Drosophila and other model systems.

Landscape genomics of Quercus lobata reveals genes involved in local climate adaptation at multiple spatial scales

Paul F. Gugger et al.

Summary: Understanding how the environment shapes genetic variation is crucial for studying the evolution of local adaptation. Through landscape genomic approaches, researchers identified genetic variation underlying local adaptation in California endemic oak, Quercus lobata, and found evidence of natural selection at multiple spatial scales. The study provides robust evidence for novel candidate genes for local climate adaptation across different spatial scales.

Morphological and genetic variation in natural populations of Quercus vulcanica and Q. frainetto

Cengiz Yucedag et al.

Summary: Quercus vulcanica and Q. frainetto, endemic species in Turkey, show differences in leaf morphology and stomatal density. Genetic analysis using molecular markers revealed low genetic differentiation between the two species, while certain loci exhibited high interspecific differentiation and were identified as outlier loci. Further studies with more populations and markers are needed to fully understand the genetic variation and potential introgression between the species.
