Natural forest regeneration in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: predictive mapping and model diagnostics

Maksym Matsala et al.

Summary: Following the 1986 nuclear disaster in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, forests have established in abandoned agricultural landscapes, but remain insufficiently monitored. Using Sentinel-2 satellite data and machine learning models, predictions of forest attributes like basal area and growing stock volume were made, with GBM outperforming other methods in predicting GSV and k-NN showing better performance in preserving empirical distribution and semivariation patterns.

Global land use changes are four times greater than previously estimated

Karina Winkler et al.

Summary: Quantifying the dynamics of global land use change is crucial for addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The unprecedented HILDA+ project reveals that land use change has significantly impacted a large portion of the global land area, with notable geographical variations in processes. Over the period of 1960-2019, afforestation and cropland abandonment were prominent in the Global North, while deforestation and agricultural expansion were more common in the South.

Wildfires in the Chornobyl exclusion zone-Risks and consequences

Nicholas A. Beresford et al.

Summary: Following the Chornobyl accident, the area surrounding the nuclear plant was abandoned, creating the Chornobyl exclusion zone. Despite being one of the most radioactive terrestrial ecosystems on earth, wildlife numbers have increased in the area due to human absence for nearly 35 years. The CEZ is now designated as nature reserves in Belarus and Ukraine, forming one of Europe's largest protected areas and serving as an iconic example of rewilding.

Radial growth of Pinus sylvestris in the East Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT): Climate and ionizing radiation

V. V. Kukarskih et al.

Summary: The East Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT) was caused by the Kyshtym accident in Russia in 1957, resulting in the death of Scots pine trees nearby. The study found that both climate and ionizing radiation have limited the radial growth of pine trees.
