Cation Radicals of Hachimoji Nucleobases P and Z: Generation in the Gas Phase and Characterization by UV-Vis Photodissociation Action Spectroscopy and Theory

Shu R. Huang et al.

Summary: Gas-phase cation radicals of unusual nucleobases 5-aza-7-deazaguanine and 6-amino-5-nitro-(1H)pyrid-2-one were generated through collision-induced intramolecular electron transfer and dissociation, characterized by various tandem mass spectrometry techniques. Ab initio calculations and computational simulations were used to determine the structures and energies of the cation radicals. The formation of these cation radicals was shown to be influenced by solution thermodynamics and dissociation kinetics of the copper-terpyridine complexes.

Dynamics and Multiconfiguration Potential Energy Surface for the Singlet O2 Reactions with Radical Cations of Guanine, 9-Methylguanine, 2′-Deoxyguanosine, and Guanosine

Yan Sun et al.

Summary: The reactions of electronically excited singlet oxygen O-1(2) with guanine derivatives were studied in the gas phase. It was found that stable peroxide product ions could be formed by adding a water molecule to the reactant ions, indicating exothermic reactions with no barriers above the reactants. The calculated reaction potential energy surface at different levels of theory showed sensitivity in predicting the energy levels of reaction intermediates and products.
