Promoting Effect of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor in Synovial Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Based Cartilage Regeneration

Gensuke Okamura et al.

Summary: Adding basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) to the culture of synovial mesenchymal stem cells (SMSC) can significantly promote cartilage regeneration in vivo, leading to better cartilage repair outcomes and more obvious cartilage matrix formation.

Lubricin Contributes to Homeostasis of Articular Cartilage by Modulating Differentiation of Superficial Zone Cells

Yuji Maenohara et al.

Summary: Loss of function of the proteoglycan 4 (Prg4) gene leads to increased articular cartilage thickness and disappearance of SFZ cells, with upregulation of Mmp9 and phosphorylated Smad2 expression. These findings highlight the importance of lubricin in maintaining articular cartilage homeostasis and suggest the involvement of the NF-κB-Mmp9-TGF-β pathway in the downstream effects of lubricin.
