Measuring Farm Animal Emotions-Sensor-Based Approaches

Suresh Neethirajan et al.

Summary: Understanding animal emotions is crucial for improving animal welfare, but currently there are no scientific assessments available for measuring emotional responses. Using sensors to collect biometric data for measuring animal emotions is a growing topic in agricultural technology, involving various sensors and processing algorithms in the analysis systems.

Vocalisations in farm animals: A step towards positive welfare assessment

Karin A. Laurijs et al.

Summary: Public concern for farm animal welfare is increasing, with an emphasis on the importance of positive emotions for animals. Vocalisations have shown potential as indicators of positive emotions in farm animals, with different species displaying unique vocalisation patterns associated with positive situations. Further research is needed to fully understand and utilize vocalisations as a tool for monitoring positive emotions on farms.

Pup ultrasonic isolation calls of six gerbil species and the relationship between acoustic traits and body size

Julia D. Kozhevnikova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ultrasonic calls of pups from six gerbil species and found that larger species had longer calls while smaller species had higher frequency calls. The duration of the calls was not related to body size, but the minimum fundamental frequency was. Species identity had a stronger effect on the acoustics of the calls than body size.

Vocal and physical phenotypes of calsyntenin2 knockout mouse pups model early-life symptoms of the autism spectrum disorder

Anna V. Klenova et al.

Summary: This study identified a new acoustic phenotype in Calsyntenin2 deficient mice during the neurodevelopment period, showing differences in ultrasonic calls and increased head-to-body ratio. Lack of calsyntenin2 affected vocalization in mice, with higher call rates in certain discomfort conditions. The emission of wideband ultrasonic calls remained consistent as a reliable indicator in Clstn2-KO mice.
