Identification of Phenolic Constituents and Inhibitory Activity of Persimmon Calyx and Shiteito against Tumor Cell Proliferation

Morio Yoshimura et al.

Summary: This study isolated and characterized a new compound, along with 26 phenolic components, from the persistent calyx on the fruit of Diospyros kaki. Analysis of Shiteito, a Kampo medicine, revealed that the main ingredient was derived from clove. The study also found that ellagic acid, a main constituent of Shiteito, exhibited significant cytotoxicity against certain cancer cells.

Senolytic Combination of Dasatinib and Quercetin Alleviates Intestinal Senescence and Inflammation and Modulates the Gut Microbiome in Aged Mice

Tatiana Dandolini Saccon et al.

Summary: The study found that the senolytic drug combination Dasatinib plus Quercetin (D+Q) significantly reduces senescent cell and inflammatory burden in the intestines of aged mice, while also altering specific microbiota signatures. The most prominent changes were observed in the small intestine. This suggests that optimized senolytic regimens may improve health in older subjects by reducing intestinal senescence, inflammation, and microbial dysbiosis.

Quercetin ameliorates reactive oxygen species generation, inflammation, mucus depletion, goblet disintegration, and tumor multiplicity in colon cancer: Probable role of adenomatous polyposis coli, β-catenin

Alpa Shree et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that quercetin can regulate colon cancer induced by DMH by targeting antioxidant mechanisms, apoptotic pathways, and early markers to inhibit the occurrence of lesions. Additionally, quercetin significantly influences the expression of APC and beta-catenin proteins, reducing tumor incidence and multiplicity. Histological results further confirm the beneficial role of quercetin in averting DMH-induced pathological alterations.

Inhibition of persimmon tannin extract on guinea pig skin pigmentation

Wanting Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that persimmon tannin extract significantly reduced melanin density, inhibited tyrosinase activity, increased antioxidant enzymes and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway inhibitors levels, and reduced the expression of inflammatory factors. Compared with arbutin, persimmon tannin extract had a more significant effect on inhibiting pigmentation, making it a promising agent for preventing skin pigmentation.

Phenolic Compounds Impact on Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Microbiota Modulation

Rosa Direito et al.

Summary: Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) have become a leading cause of death in industrialized nations due to high fat and sugar diets, stress, and lack of physical activity. Phenolic compounds in diets have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative activities that benefit human health. Overcoming the limited bioavailability of these compounds is important for maximizing their health benefits.

Evaluation of polyphenol bioaccessibility and kinetic of starch digestion of spaghetti with persimmon (Dyospyros kaki) flours coproducts during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion

Raquel Lucas-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Adding persimmon flour can significantly improve the polyphenol profile of spaghetti, with an increase of around 2 to 3 times at 3% and 6% concentrations, respectively. The effects of cooking and digestion processes were found to impact the free polyphenol content more than the bound polyphenols. Additionally, spaghetti enriched with 3% persimmon flour showed a reduction in starch digestion kinetics, while 6% enriched spaghetti increased it.

Pork Liver Pate Enriched with Persimmon Coproducts: Effect of In Vitro Gastrointestinal Digestion on Its Fatty Acid and Polyphenol Profile Stability

Raquel Lucas-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Agrofood coproducts are utilized to enhance meat products by reducing harmful compounds and boosting fiber and polyphenol levels. The addition of persimmon coproducts in pork liver pates showed stability in fatty acid profiles, increased bound polyphenols, and varying effects on lipid oxidation during gastrointestinal digestion. Lipolysis with different lipase activity influenced the stability of bound polyphenols and led to increased lipid oxidation.

A Triple Threat? The Role of Diet, Nutrition, and the Microbiota in T1D Pathogenesis

Emma E. Hamilton-Williams et al.

Summary: Recent research has highlighted the important role of the intestinal microbiota in diseases like T1D, with diet and nutrition potentially playing a key role in shaping the composition and function of the microbiota. While the specific mechanisms behind the link between the microbiota and T1D remain unclear, a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between the microbiota and various body systems could offer rational approaches to prevent diseases like T1D. Further research into the effects of diet and other modifiable factors on the microbiota ecosystem may provide insights into preventing childhood immune and allergic diseases, as well as assessing the efficacy of interventions.
