Summary: The Mediterranean diet has been shown to have a positive impact on the nutritional state, liver steatosis, clinical disease activity, and quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, improving some conditions and reducing symptoms in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients.

Fatty Acids and a High-Fat Diet Induce Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition by Activating TGFβ and β-Catenin in Liver Cells

Oliwia Kwapisz et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver without excessive alcohol consumption. Chronic inflammation can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and potentially hepatocellular carcinoma development. Transforming growth factor beta plays a role in inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibrosis. Studies have shown that exposure to fatty acids or a high-fat diet can lead to inflammation and changes associated with liver fibrosis.

Summary: This study found an increase in endoplasmic reticulum stress proteins, including AGR2, in the epithelium of CD ileal fibrotic strictures. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the secretion of AGR2 by epithelial cells may play a role in myofibroblastic differentiation.

Fermented Rice Bran Supplementation Prevents the Development of Intestinal Fibrosis Due to DSS-Induced Inflammation in Mice

Afifah Zahra Agista et al.

Summary: The study showed that dietary FRB supplementation can promote intestinal restoration after DSS-induced colitis and reduce the development of intestinal fibrosis. FRB supplementation also decreased the severity of colitis, increased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, tight junction proteins, and antimicrobial proteins in the intestines.

Summary: This prospective study found that 6 months of Mediterranean diet in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients led to improvement in several metabolic syndrome-associated parameters and therapy response. The Mediterranean diet may be considered as a background therapy in the treatment of IBD, helping to improve nutritional status, liver steatosis, clinical disease activity, and quality of life.
