Efficacy and Mechanisms of Oleuropein in Mitigating Diabetes and Diabetes Complications

Summary: Oleuropein is a dietary bioactive compound that shows potential in ameliorating diabetes and its complications. Its beneficial effects include modulation of insulin secretion, repair of islet morphology, activation of hepatic AMP-activated protein kinase signaling, improvement of glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Oleuropein can also alleviate diabetes complications such as diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular complications, retinopathy, wound healing, neuropathy, and testicular dysfunction by reversing cell apoptosis, regenerating tissues, restoring histological organization, and decreasing oxidative stress. It is a promising compound for the management of diabetes and its complications and can be used as a nutraceutical in combating these diseases.
