Precise localization and semantic segmentation detection of printing conditions in fused filament fabrication technologies using machine learning

Zeqing Jin et al.

Summary: This paper proposes machine learning algorithms for precise localization and semantic segmentation detection of printing conditions in additive manufacturing. Results demonstrate that the advanced detection system can provide comprehensive defect information for real-time assessment and improve detection latency by successfully recognizing transitions between print quality conditions within a single raster.

Mechanical and Crack Propagating Behavior of Sierpinski Carpet Composites

Ya-Yun Tsai et al.

Summary: By utilizing the lattice spring model, the study simulated tensile tests on SC composites with two base materials and found that the second iteration had optimal mechanical performance in terms of stiffness, strength, and toughness. The main crack behavior varied between SC composites with soft and stiff matrices, with a tendency for local deflection in soft-base composites and large equivalent crack deflection in stiff-base composites. Additionally, rotating the samples by 45 degrees resulted in inferior tensile strength and toughness in the SC composites, highlighting the potential for engineering applications in crack control and deflection by adjusting the orientation.

Tunable interface hardening: Designing tough bio-inspired composites through 3D printing, testing, and computational validation

Ashish Ghimire et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the evolution and tunability of deformation behavior in staggered composites through design optimization, 3D-printing, and simulation. It identifies two fracture mechanisms, columnar and non-columnar fractures, which explain the observed hardening and toughening in interlocking and non-interlocking tablet topologies. Computation analyses at various fracture stages provide insights into the change in stress concentrations, deepening the understanding of fracture mechanisms.
