Assessment of different agents for stabilisation of a clay soil

A. R. Estabragh et al.

Summary: The effects of different agents on soil stabilization were investigated through laboratory experiments. It was found that the agents could increase the strength of soil samples, with the amount of increase depending on the percentage of the agents and curing time. The activation of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) with Magnesia (MgO) and MgO:Cement was more effective in increasing the strength compared to GGBS alone. The increase in strength of the stabilized soil resulted from bonding between soil particles and stabilizing agents, as observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

Sulphate soil stabilisation with magnesium binders for road subgrade construction

A. Seco et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the ability of magnesium oxide-based additives to stabilize a low bearing gypsum marly soil. The study shows that the addition of magnesium oxide products, especially when combined with ground granulated blast furnace slags, can effectively improve the strength and reduce the swelling and leaching of the soil. Field trials have demonstrated that some magnesium oxide products, when combined with GGBS, meet the bearing capacity requirements for subgrades.

An investigation of sulfate effects on compaction characteristics and strength development of cement-treated sulfate bearing clay subgrade

A. Kampala et al.

Summary: This study confirmed through experiments that increasing cement content and curing time in cement-stabilised sulfate soil can accelerate the reduction of compressive strength, while also discovering that soil exhibits the highest compressive strength at the optimal moisture content.

Experimental study on the correlation between the partial and total salt content in saline gravel using ion chromatography

Liyang Wang et al.

Summary: The soluble salt content plays a crucial role in saline soils, affecting physical properties and remedial measures. Determining total salt content in gravel is essential for addressing potential salt-induced issues in infrastructure. Through testing and theoretical models, a relationship between partial and total salt content has been established, indicating a strong correlation and optimal results with a 5 mm sieve.

Incorporation of a nanotechnology-based product in cementitious binders for sustainable mitigation of sulphate-induced heaving of stabilised soils

Eyo U. Eyo et al.

Summary: The study focuses on reducing sulphate-induced heaving in soils by partially substituting cement (CEM I) with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and incorporating marginal quantities of RoadCem (RC) additive. Results showed a 67% reduction in heave when 1% of RC was added to the cementitious mix, and an increase in unsoaked strength of stabilised soil with RC inclusion.

Shallow mixing and column performances of lime, fly ash and gypsum on the stabilization of swelling soils

Derya Toksoz Hozatlioglu et al.

Summary: The study compared the performances of additives in shallow mixing and column techniques by simulating ground models in the laboratory, finding that lime achieved the best improvement for both techniques, while gypsum exhibited the lowest performance. Additionally, the shallow mixing technique showed higher performances than the column technique for lime, fly ash, and gypsum.

Hydration and microstructural characteristics of MgO in the presence of metakaolin and silica fume

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: This paper presents the characteristics of hydration products and microstructural development of reactive MgO in the presence of metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF), including thermodynamic modeling. It was found that the hydration of MgO-MK mixes led to the formation of hydrotalcite-like phase, brucite, and M-S-H, resulting in a low porosity microstructure and higher compressive strength compared to MgO-SF mixes. The bound water content of hydration products showed a reasonable relationship with compressive strength for both SF and MK mixes.

Mechanical performances and microstructural characteristics of reactive MgO-carbonated silt subjected to freezing-thawing cycles

Guanghua Cai et al.

Summary: Reactive magnesia-carbonated silt shows better freeze-thaw durability in severely cold climate compared to Portland cement-stabilized silt, with lower mass change ratio and moisture content, higher density and strength. The strength of MgO-carbonated silt remains high after freeze-thaw cycles, showing potential for soil treatment applications.

Significance of compaction time delay on compaction and strength characteristics of sulfate resistant cement-treated expansive soil

P. Sriram Karthick Raja et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using sulfate resistant cement as a stabilizer along with controlled addition of sulfate solutions to mitigate the negative effects of compaction time delay in stabilizing expansive soil. Experimental results showed that compaction delay led to formation of clogs and reduction in strength of SRC-stabilized soil. Addition of sulfate did not curtail clogs formation and resulted in ettringite clusters, as observed through SEM images and EDAX analysis.Mechanism of density and strength reduction was explored through physico-chemical properties and MIP studies.

Use of kaolinite clays in development of a low carbon MgO-clay binder system

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that magnesium oxide based cements can serve as a promising alternative to Portland cement, and can be produced using calcined kaolinitic clay. The MgO binder shows comparable or better compressive strength and significantly lower porosity compared to systems containing silica fume. The presence of magnesium carbonate further enhances the physical properties of the clay mixes.

Effect of environmental pH values on phase composition and microstructure of Portland cement paste under sulfate attack

Gaozhan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of pH value on cement hydration products under sulfate attack. Lowering the pH value of sulfate solution promotes the formation of gypsum crystals and inhibits the ettringite formation in cement paste. The research also shows that the reduction of pH value accelerates the transformation reactions of aluminate phases and enhances the silicate polymerization.

Summary: This study investigated the use of different materials for the stabilization of sulfate-bearing soil to prevent ettringite formation, with results showing that M-RHA, M-GGBS, and M-GGBS-RHA as stabilizers can effectively prevent the formation of ettringite, resulting in lower swelling rates and higher strengths compared to lime-stabilized binders.

Mechanical Behavior of Gypseous Soil Treated with Lime

Abdulrahman Aldaood et al.

Summary: Gypseous soil is highly sensitive to moisture changes and loses strength when saturated. Lime stabilization is commonly used to improve this soil for civil engineering projects. This study investigated the impact of gypsum and lime percentages on the unconfined compressive strength of fine-grained soil. Optimal gypsum and lime percentages for improving strength were found to be 5%, with the influence of gypsum addition depending on curing periods and lime percentage. The micro tests revealed the formation of pozzolanic reaction products and ettringite minerals, which initially increased soil strength but eventually led to a decline in strength properties.
