Promises and Challenges of Next-Generation Beyond Li-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Grid Decarbonization

Hence, exploration of beyond lithium-ion technologies including sodium-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries, all-solid-state batteries, and multivalent batteries is accelerating.

An Anode-Free Zn-MnO2 Battery

Summary: Aqueous Zn-based batteries are promising due to their low cost and high capacity, but existing designs use excess Zn which reduces energy density. A new anode-free design utilizing nanocarbon nucleation layer enables uniform Zn electrodeposition with high efficiency and stability across various current densities. This innovation opens up new possibilities for implementing Zn-based batteries in energy storage systems.

A decline in global CFC-11 emissions during 2018-2019

Summary: The atmospheric concentration of CFC-11 has been declining since the phasing out of ozone-depleting substances, with a surprising slowdown in decline from 2013 to 2018 due to increasing emissions. However, recent data shows an accelerated decline in global emissions of CFC-11 in 2019 and 2020, indicating a substantial decrease in unreported production. This reduction in emissions bodes well for limiting future ozone depletion and suggests a timely recovery of the stratospheric ozone layer.
