Atomistic modeling of electrocatalysis: Are we there yet?

Nawras Abidi et al.

Summary: Electrified interfaces play a crucial role in energy technologies, but understanding and modeling them at an atomistic level is challenging due to their structural complexity and the presence of electrochemical potential. Realistic relationships between potential and surface charge require consideration of solvent and counter charge. However, the descriptions of solvent and electrolyte are limited by computational power, leading to validation issues in both explicit and implicit methods.

Operando Methods in Electrocatalysis

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis is crucial for advancing renewable energy technologies, and understanding the structure and reaction mechanisms of electrocatalysts at electrode-electrolyte interfaces is fundamental. In situ and operando techniques, such as operando synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and in situ atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy, provide valuable insights into the interfacial structural and compositional changes under reaction conditions, aiding in the study of charge transfer kinetics and reaction mechanisms. The continuous development of these techniques will contribute significantly to establishing structure/composition-reactivity correlations of electrocatalysts at unprecedented atomic-scale and molecular levels under realistic, real-time reaction conditions.

Activity and Stability of Oxides During Oxygen Evolution Reaction---From Mechanistic Controversies Toward Relevant Electrocatalytic Descriptors

Aleksandar R. Zeradjanin et al.

Summary: Developing a roadmap for future renewable energy requires technological advancement of devices like electrolyzers and fuel cells, which relies on a deep understanding of interfacial energy conversion processes and electrocatalytic activity. Particularly challenging is the oxygen evolution reaction, which demands long-term high activity from electrocatalysts and electrode support materials. Understanding the reliability of reported activity and stability trends, linking activity and stability, and determining the importance of this relationship are vital in building a comprehensive understanding of anodic oxygen evolution.

Ab Initio Thermodynamics and Kinetics of the Lattice Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Iridium Oxides

Alexandra Zagalskaya et al.

Summary: Iridium-oxide-based catalysts are highly active and stable for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction in acidic media, but their longevity may be compromised by the active participation of lattice oxygen atoms. The involvement of lattice oxygen in the OER can enhance the activity of some Ir oxides, but also compromise materials stability. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the lattice oxygen evolution reaction for more reliable computational predictions of electrochemically stable OER catalysts.

Why approximating electrocatalytic activity by a single free-energy change is insufficient

Kai S. Exner

Summary: This paper compares three descriptors for approximating electrocatalytic activity and emphasizes the simplicity of assessing activity through a single free-energy change. These descriptors include thermodynamic overpotential, electrochemical-step symmetry index, and overpotential-dependent activity descriptor for multiple-electron processes.
